【Doing Business in the Greater Bay Area】How to successfully open a Bank Account in China?!

With the full clearance for travel between Mainland China and Hong Kong, the flow of people between the two regions has only increased. In Mainland China, going cashless has become the norm and many Hong Kong residents have opened bank accounts in Mainland China to make travel and spending more convenient.
However, if you plan to start a business in the Greater Bay Area, you need to pay attention to the different types of bank accounts available, their uses and limitations, as well as the application process, which can vary greatly.
Types of accounts:
To begin with, there are three main types of bank accounts in Mainland China, with Type II and Type III accounts suitable for smaller transactions such as everyday expenses, transfers, etc. These accounts have daily and annual transaction limits, but are sufficient for most people. To open these accounts, you generally only need a Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card, Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macau Residents valid for at least six months, and a Hong Kong or Mainland China mobile phone number registered in your name. Most Hong Kong residents choose to open Type II or Type III accounts due to their ease of application.
However, for business owners who need to receive and pay expenses that exceed the transaction limits of Type II and Type III accounts, it is recommended to open a Type I account with full functionality. Type I accounts have no transaction limits, and offer a wide range of services including cash deposits and withdrawals, bill payments, large transfers, and investment options. They also allow for flexible fund transfers between Mainland China and Hong Kong, which can be beneficial for business development and expansion.
The key to success: A tax demand note is a must.
If you plan to open a bank account in China, it is recommended to consult an accountant and prepare all necessary documents in advance to avoid any unnecessary delay. In addition to your identity card and Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macau Residents, you will need to provide proof of your Mainland China address, a Mainland China mobile phone number that has already been authenticated, and other relevant documents. In particular, you will need to provide a tax demand note which stated your taxpayer identification number to pass the latest tax certification requirements in Mainland China. However, for most of the business owner, if your company has reported losses in the past or has not paid taxes for you as salary several years, how can you provide a tax demand note for application? Tax demand note are only issued once a year, and missing the deadline means waiting until the next year. This missed opportunity could cost you a lot. To avoid any potential roadblocks for your business’s future development, it is recommended to consult a professional accountant for tax planning.
